iPhone: 5 Cool Uses

Posted in Technology by Taylor Dobbs on 04/30/2009

So, it’s been a long while since my last post, and this is mostly to blame on Killzone 2 (review to come), end-of-the-year college madness, and my new iPhone. Yes, I have an iPhone. This thing is amazing! I’ve had it for about two weeks now and the thing is just about perfect. All the common complaints are there, of course: Not enough apps switch to landscape when you tilt the phone sideways, the keyboard can be hard to use, etc. But let’s not forget, I just posted a Twitter update from my phone. It’s easy to get caught up in what this technology can’t do, but did anybody complain that Michael Jordan couldn’t jump fifteen feet? No. So let me be wowed by the amazing abilities of my iPhone. This may be old for any of you iPhone users out there, but I still enjoy it.

Twitter Madness on The Dobbs Method

Posted in Internet by Taylor Dobbs on 04/16/2009

For those who read my last post and chose to ignore it and not get a Twitter account, I would just like to say that twitter had a huge effect here at The Dobbs Method yesterday. Before yesterday, despite those of you who loyally follow my posts, the best day for The Dobbs Method was 66 hits.

After posting my 5 Reasons Why You Should Get Twitter post, @Twitter_Tips picked it up and posted a link to their 62,000+ followers and the blog hit an all time high: over 852 views. If there’s a point you want to make and you want to get it out fast, post it on Twitter.

If you ignored yesterday’s post, think again.

5 Reasons Why You Should Get Twitter

Posted in Culture, Internet by Taylor Dobbs on 04/13/2009

The student newspaper at my college recently published a very funny and cynical piece on the pointlessness of Twitter as a social network. If that’s not enough, friends are constantly heckling me about it and asking what the point is. While Twitter does highlight some of modern society’s flaws (like the infinite ability we have to be impersonal), it also creates many benefits for its users.

My Top 6 Uses for the Internet

Posted in Internet by Taylor Dobbs on 04/07/2009

ScreenshotThe internet is a big place. Somehow, though, almost everyone who uses it stays confined to very few sites. Walking into any dorm room on campus, I am likely to see YouTube, Facebook, MySpace (for those same kids who just can’t let go), or the University webpage on a screen. Though my web-diet is slightly more diverse, I too am a creature of habit.

What do I do when the ethernet cable’s plugged in?

I Take it Back: BF:BC is FUN

Mortar Targeting in Battlefield: Bad Company

Mortar Targeting in Battlefield: Bad Company

A few months ago, I posted a negative review of Battlefield: Bad Company. I had only played through the first part of the game, and obviously judged it before I had a good idea what it was about. I complained about unsatisfying headshots, an obnoxiously stupid squad, an unrealistic enemy, and how getting kills isn’t even fun.

The headshots still don’t take heads clean off, the squad is as stupid as ever, and the enemy is still unrealistic. So why am I writing this post? It’s more a realization I made as I played along (I picked the game back up over the weekend, again sick of Call of Duty 4). This game isn’t about any specific war. It doesn’t care what flag you fly or what your morals are, this game for lack of a better phrase, is war. This game is about the combined efforts of a team to complete objectives and eliminate enemies.
